Why Should You Fix Orthodontic Problems?

Orthodontic issues are chronic conditions, meaning the teeth will continue to shift and move if the alignment issues are not corrected. Cosmetic issues are the most obvious concern, but crooked or misaligned teeth can contribute to some health and functional dental risks, such as:

  • Difficulty brushing and flossing
  • Gingivitis and gum disease
  • Receding gum line
  • Tooth decay
  • Bite problems
  • Chipped, worn, or broken teeth
  • Worn or abraded tooth enamel

Depending on the person’s specific condition, the problems can cascade into more complicated bite problems and TMJ-related disorders. Our office has the unique ability to diagnose complicated jaw pain cases and treat TMJ patients with Invisalign®. We can also determine if sleep apnea contributes to teeth misalignment and utilize Invisalign as a treatment option for that as well. Treating orthodontic issues early on allows for the most conservative treatment options.

Dr. Jacob Grapevine is a Plano Invisalign® provider, offering this convenient and comfortable orthodontic treatment option to teens and adults. Invisalign is one of the most popular and effective ways to address both cosmetic and dental health concerns. Many teen and adult patients with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns benefit from Invisalign.

Invisalign can treat crooked teeth, crowded teeth, overbite, and cross-bite with clear retainers that are comfortable, easy to use, and discreet- no one has to know you are wearing braces.

Enjoying your healthy regular diet and keeping your teeth clean is easy with comfortable with removable aligners.  Each set of aligners should be worn for about 22 hours a day but can be removed for brushing and meal time.

After an initial consultation, Dr. Grapevine will use Invisalign® software to plan your treatment and address your concerns.

Most patients will receive several sets of retainers; each pair is worn for about two weeks to reposition the teeth gradually. The length of treatment depends on your condition as well as your goals. Invisalign treatment is typically completed in a year or less. Special retainers and follow-up visits with Dr. Grapevine will help you to maintain your straighter smile.

Dr. Jacob Grapevine offers treatment options for patients needing mild to moderate orthodontics to address various cosmetic or dental health concerns. Invisalign provides convenient, invisible treatment for teens and adults.

This treatment option is ideal for young adult and adult patients suffering from orthodontic relapse or those with minor alignment concerns. The average treatment time is about six months, compared to alternatives, which typically take a year or more.

Dr. Grapevine will thoroughly evaluate your dental health and discuss your cosmetic concerns and goals before recommending a treatment plan designed to meet your needs.

Your procedure will begin with impressions of your teeth to be used in making your custom aligners. Once ready, you will be given instructions on how to use the aligners and when to change them during the course of your treatment. Dr. Grapevine will monitor your progress during scheduled visits to ensure a good result.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Clear braces are ideal for patients to straighten their crooked teeth later in life. Many adults believe that they are ” too old” for metal braces and fear the stigma and discomfort of wearing them. Clear braces give patients a way to confidently improve their bite and the appearance of their smile.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

  • Removable: Clear aligners are removable. This allows patients to maintain their regular oral hygiene routine during treatment. Patients can brush and floss all surfaces of the teeth preventing the development of cavities and tooth discoloration often associated with metal braces. Patients can also remove the aligners while they eat, so they do not have to limit their diet.
  • Discreet: The clear aligners are custom designed to fit snugly over teeth. The transparent material is barely visible to others, and patients can speak and carry on normal interactions without fearing embarrassment.
  • Comfortable: Clear braces aligners are designed to slowly and comfortably realign the teeth. Each set of aligners will shift teeth further into alignment. The material is smooth and does not damage the lips, gums, or other soft oral tissues. Clear braces do not require painful tightening appointments.

Taking Care of Your Invisalign Aligners

Your aligners can’t properly straighten your smile unless you’re taking care of them. If your aligners get damaged, we must make new ones, prolonging your treatment time. Aligners can also scratch and stain. When this happens, they no longer look transparent on your teeth, eliminating the subtlety many people turn to Invisalign for.

Keeping your aligners clean is crucial. When you take them out of your mouth, rinse them off with cool or lukewarm water. Never use hot water to clean your aligners; it can warp the material.

Clean them thoroughly at least once daily. Use a soft toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to gently brush your aligners. You can also use a mild antibacterial soap. Don’t use harsh cleaners or abrasive toothpaste, as these scratch your aligners. Thoroughly rinse them out when you’re done to remove any toothpaste residue. Thoroughly clean your teeth before you put your clean aligners back in.

Once a week, do a deep clean for your aligners. Use Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaning tablets and water. Soak your aligners in this solution for a few minutes to sterilize them and remove any stubborn bacteria hanging on them. They also take care of any persistent stains or odors. Just like regular cleaning, rinse the aligners and remove any residue leftover after cleaning them.

Don’t eat or drink anything except water when your aligners are in. The material isn’t designed to withstand the pressure of biting down or chewing food. It’s easy to damage or crack them. Foods and drinks with pigmentation or a high sugar content stain the aligners, so they lose the transparent quality they’re known for.

Invisalign does require a level of responsibility. When you take them out to eat, you shouldn’t put them in a napkin where they can accidentally be thrown away. Put them in a specific carrying case when you’re not wearing them. It should be ventilated to discourage bacteria growth on it. You’ll know where your aligners are, and they’ll stay safe from any damage.

Invisalign® FAQs

How long do you have to wear Invisalign®?

Your treatment time will depend on factors such as the type of malocclusion issue being corrected, amount of teeth affected, and how well you followed instructions. Most patients complete Invisalign treatment well within three years. Patients with minor corrections needed can complete treatment in as little as eight months.

Can Invisalign® give you a lisp?

You will need to give yourself a short period of time to get used to your Invisalign clear aligners. During this time, your speech may be affected. You may temporarily develop a lisp and mild discomfort. This is only temporary as you get used to wearing your aligners.

Do I still need to wear a retainer after Invisalign®?

Yes. Retainers are still the first and best defense against orthodontic relapse. Orthodontic relapse happens when no retainer is used to keep teeth in place immediately after the completion of any orthodontic treatment. You risk undoing everything your Invisalign treatment has corrected by not wearing a retainer.
